Build.com Network of Stores

Build.com is part of the Build.com Network of Stores, which includes plumbing, HVAC, lighting, door hardware, tools and flooring. Most products are available on Build.com, but if you have trouble finding something specific, our niche sites occasionally have a larger selection of specialty products.

Our History

Way back in 2000, the words “dot-com” had investors running from start-ups. Yet Christian Friedland was inspired by this challenge. At the time, Christian was working at a local plumbing distributor. He was also working on his Computer Science Master’s Project at California State University, Chico.

Christian looked to offer what local hardware and big box stores couldn’t: simple and quick access to a much greater selection of plumbing fixtures and faucets in an online format that shoppers can easily browse from home. After his friend and classmate David Boctor provided the early funding, FaucetDirect.com was launched as one of the first online sources for plumbing products.

In the early days, the company was operated out of Christian’s college apartment, while David provided the early funding. Christian and David then partnered with Craig Stilwell and with his knowledge of online marketing, revenue skyrocketed.

In 2010, the company was renamed Build.com to reflect the diverse breadth of product offered.

A lot has changed since Christian’s early vision of a new online business succeeding where others had failed. Build.com has grown from a “school project” for its founders to an online leader in multiple categories like plumbing, lighting, door hardware, and ventilation, with more than 370 employees dedicated to helping you with all your home improvement projects, both big and small.
